Alor-Ambon Expedition

Indonesia
Adventure Provided by: Brian U.

What to expect

We follow the route of the pristine reefs of Alor, with their beautiful dive sites and pelagics crossing the channel, towards the forgotten islands of Pulau Wetar and Gunung Api. Pulau Wetar has spectacular drop offs and Gunung Api, which also happens to be an active volcano, is most famous for its population of sea snakes that are completely harmless for divers.

Then we find our way towards the chain of beautiful islands of Damar, Terbang Selatan, and Terbang Utara, deserted islands with white sand beaches surrounded by magnificent coral reefs, steep walls and the most pristine coral garden on top of the reef. Karang Dusborgh and Karang Nil Desperandum are underwater seamounts that are about 3 meters below the surface. Besides the remote corals, we encounter bigger pelagics such as tuna, rainbow runners and Spanish mackerel. Hammerheads are also a common sight!

We then sail along islands that mark the way towards Pulau Manuk and the Banda Islands. We hope to find schooling hammerhead sharks and large pelagics at submerged reefs. The remoteness of the islands in the wide open Banda Sea and the low levels of human population have meant less fishing and therefore a vibrant, natural, and healthy reef system so, you can expect reefs bursting with life, huge sea fans and sponges, some monumental hard corals, and an abundance of fish.

Gunung Api, an active volcano, is most famous for its population of sea snakes that are completely harmless for divers. On the islands, we offer you the opportunity to visit the old historic town of Banda Neira. Here you will find many remnants of the Dutch and English spice trade. The Dutch Fort Belgica offers great views of the port and Gunung Api volcano. The last part of the trip we sail from the Banda islands towards Ambon to end the trip with the beautiful underwater macro life in the bay.

Please note: This trip can be between 12-16 nights.
