Good to know

  • Dive the Black sea in Bulgaria
  • One of Europe's most underrated diving destinations
  • Lots of underwater seascapes to explore
Have you ever heard anyone saying 'this year I'll go diving in Bulgaria'? I bet the answer is no - Bulgaria is one of Europe's most underrated destinations when it comes to beach holidays, and the diving is truly unique. The brackish waters of the Black Sea are perfect for preserving wrecks of all ages, some even dating back to 3000 years ago. The coastal city of Varna is one of Bulgaria's prime beach destinations, and one of the main things to do in Varna is diving the submerged ancient Roman port. Another top Bulgaria dive site is the German Black Sea Fleet, lying on the bottom of the sea in perfect conditions since Second World War, alongside some Russian submarines. There's even an airplane sunken into the Black Sea, owned by the former Communist leader of the country. Marine life in the Black Sea includes species such as sea horses, scorpion fish, mackerel and turbot - it may not be as vibrant as Mexico or Indonesia, but still interesting!
