  • Explore the wonderful Galapagos Islands underwater
  • Or head to Machalilla National Park
  • One of the most biodiverse regions on the planet
I bet you've never heard anyone saying they'll go diving in Ecuador this year - even though this South American country is home to some of the most unique marine fauna on the planet. The majority of diving in Ecuador takes place off the shore, either in the uber-famous Galapagos Islands or in the Machalilla National Park, also known as 'Poor Man's Galapagos'. There are no reefs to speak of, but instead you have the chance to dive with some large marine species. While diving in the Galapagos islands species like turtles and sea lions are pretty much commonplace - but what about diving with penguins and marine iguanas? Other species often seen when diving the Galapagos include hammerhead sharks and the mysterious mola mola or sunfish. If your wallet doesn't quite stretch enough to afford the Galapagos, Machalilla National Park is a good alternative. The includes two islands, Isla Salango and the small Isla de la Plata, where you may spot some Galapagos species as well as manta rays and dolphins.  Have we made you curious about diving in Ecuador?
