Are you someone who seeks out the thrills in life, someone who likes to take things to the extreme and try anything? Meet kitesurfing. As the kiters out there already know, the thrill of kitesurfing is like nothing else on earth (or water!). From the pleasure of sailing around some of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, to the exhilaration of harnessing the wind and riding the waves, this sport is truly breathtaking.

Dubbed the ‘new golf’ by Forbes Magazine, kitesurfing has exploded in popularity in recent years, counting CEOs such as Richard Branson, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, among its fans. In fact, so large has its appeal become that sports officials even considered adding it to the lineup of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

There are many different styles of kitesurfing, but most of the rider community would at least agree on the best places to take to the skies. Here are the top five of them:

1. La Ventana, Baja California
Situated near the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California, Kitesurfers flock to La Ventana (‘the wind”) for its beauty as well its superb kitesurfing conditions. Thanks to its steady winter winds and large L-shaped beach, the conditions are perfect for both beginners as well as more advanced kitesurfers looking to practice their skills. Known locally as the Sea of Cortez, UNESCO declared the sparkling waters a World Heritage Site for its biodiversity and outstanding natural beauty.

2. Nabq Bay, Egypt
Egypt is by far one of the most exotic kitesurfing locations in the world and this enchanting beach town offers a riding area encircled by reefs, which create relatively shallow and flat waters, and the wind blows at least 20 knots on most days. The reefs also means that the riding area is minimally affected by tides, giving you hours of uninterrupted play time in the smooth, crystal clear waters.

3. The Calamines Islands, Philippines
Unless you actually travel there directly by boat, he unspoiled tranquility of the Calamines Islands will take a plane and then a boat ride to get to. But however you get there, the ideal and uncrowded kitesurfing conditions - possibly the best in Southeast Asia - make it all worth it. The secluded area has conditions for every skill level: open water chop or silky smooth water all surrounded by outstanding natural beauty. The windy season is during the dry, winter months, making this location perfect for kitesurfers who are looking to escape the numbing chill of a Western winter.

4. Maui, Hawaii
Already renowned for being a tropical paradise, Maui, Hawaii is also one of the most incredible kitesurfing spots in the world. In fact, no list of the world’s top kitesurfing spots would be complete without it; it’s been credited for being the birthplace of modern kiteboarding in the 90s — being the stage of the first ever kitesurfing competition. The island is warm throughout the year and it’s perfect for first-time beginners, those with a more advanced skill-level and even the seasoned pro. Plus, when you’re not riding, you can enjoy the lush greenery, tropical flowers, incredible sunsets and laid-back Hawaiian vibe of beach by day, luaus by night.

5. Tarifa, Spain
The Strait of Gibraltar forms the perfect wind tunnel between Europe and Africa — ideal for kitesurfers who flock there year round. It’s the reason why Tarifa has grown into one of the most popular meccas for kitesurfers, not only for Spaniards and other Europeans, but also for competitors from around the world. And with nearly 300 days of wind and sun every year, it’s easy to see why. The area is full of great beaches (try Los Lances or Valdevaqueros) and amazing scenery, not forgetting of course, the utterly irresistible Spanish food and wine.

The best way to go

Unquestionably, the best way to travel to the world’s best kitesurfing locations is by boat.
