Good to know

  • Discover this offbeat Greek region
  • Escape the crowds and enjoy wonderful beaches
  • Choose between history, adventure, nature... or all of the above!
Messenia is unlike any Greece you've known so far. International holiday makers usually overlook this diverse peninsula in the Peloponnese region - Messenia is unspoilt and laid back, and crowds are really not a thing. Touring Messenia on a private cruise will allow you to enjoy the beaches in total solitude. Voidokilia island is one of the best known, a white sand crescent surrounded by crystalline sea. Messenia is famous among history buffs for having been the location of the battle of Navarino, where the Greek defeated Turkish occupiers in 1827. Some historic monuments that are worth seeing include Methoni castle, built by the Venetians in the 13th century, the Frankish-built Paleokastro and Nestor's Cave. Nature lovers will also be spoilt while visiting Messenia - the Gialova lagoon is an important wetlands area and the only European habitat of the African chameleon, and there are projects to protect the nesting areas of loggerhead turtles. Messenia is also set to become a hotspot in the Greece diving panorama, with the opening of the Pylos unsderwater museum.
