Hope Spot - Bering Sea Deep Canyons: protect this precious ecosystem

About Hope Spot - Bering Sea Deep Canyons: protect this precious ecosystem
Home to albatross and kittiwakes, orcas, walrus and fur seals, king crab, squid, salmon and coldwater corals, the Bering Sea Deep Canyons support a near-endless variety of life. They encompass one of the wildest regions in the world and are the source of more than half of the seafood caught in the United States. Spanning more than 770,000 square miles between Western Alaska and Russia’s Siberian coast, this area is home to vast numbers of whales, seals, sea lions, sea birds, ancient deep-sea corals, and people in Alaska’s indigenous coastal communities—all dependent on a healthy ecosystem. However, the Bering Sea’s beautiful and carefully balanced habitats are threatened by industrial fishing.
About Mission Blue
Mission Blue is an initiative of the Sylvia Earle Alliance to ignite public support for the protection of Hope Spots through the creation of a global network of marine protected areas to safeguard 20% of the ocean by 2020.
