Hope Spot - Coral Sea: protect one of the world living wonders

About Hope Spot - Coral Sea: protect one of the world living wonders
Named for its staggering biomass and diversity of corals, this region includes the Great Barrier Reef—the world’s “largest living thing”—which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. A marginal sea off the northeast coast of Australia, the Coral Sea hosts an enormous diversity of species. Spectacular coral reefs, remote islands and towering underwater mountains along with deep-sea canyons add to the diversity and uniqueness of this area. The Great Barrier Reef is considered one of the living wonders of the world. However, recent actions by the Australian government to permit industrialization near the reef pose threats to the health of this precious ecosystem.
About Mission Blue
Mission Blue is an initiative of the Sylvia Earle Alliance to ignite public support for the protection of Hope Spots through the creation of a global network of marine protected areas to safeguard 20% of the ocean by 2020.
