Hope Spot - Micronesian Islands: this pristine region is greater in size than the United States

About Hope Spot - Micronesian Islands: this pristine region is greater in size than the United States
The 2,100 Micronesian Islands are scattered across the heart of the southwestern Pacific Ocean. Including Guam, the Marshall Islands and Palau, this region is greater in size than the continental United States and contains the deepest abyss in the ocean—the Mariana Trench—as well as pristine coral reefs. Commercial fisheries from Japan and other countries have historically extracted vast numbers of tuna, removing a vital piece from the marine food web and at times inhibiting sustainable fishing methods practiced by indigenous islanders.
About Mission Blue
Mission Blue is an initiative of the Sylvia Earle Alliance to ignite public support for the protection of Hope Spots through the creation of a global network of marine protected areas to safeguard 20% of the ocean by 2020.
