Hope Spot - Ross Sea: help protect the most pristine marine ecosystem on Earth

About Hope Spot - Ross Sea: help protect the most pristine marine ecosystem on Earth
The Ross Sea is a deep bay found in the Southern Ocean just off the coast of Antarctica. Its icy waters are often referred to as the most pristine marine ecosystem on Earth because, unlike most of the global ocean, it has remained relatively free from widespread pollution, invasive species, mining and overfishing. An abundance of krill supports a diverse food web of charismatic species in the Ross Sea, including Antarctic toothfish; Weddell seals; sperm, orca, and blue whales; and invertebrates like sea spiders and brittle stars. Numerous penguin and other seabird species nest in and near the Ross Sea, which is partially covered by the Ross Ice Shelf. Researchers are concerned that climate change may dislodge the Ross Ice Shelf, reducing essential sea ice cover.
About Mission Blue
Mission Blue is an initiative of the Sylvia Earle Alliance to ignite public support for the protection of Hope Spots through the creation of a global network of marine protected areas to safeguard 20% of the ocean by 2020.
