Hope Spot - Salas y Gómez and Nazca Ridges: protect unique species

About Hope Spot - Salas y Gómez and Nazca Ridges: protect unique species
The Salas y Gómez and Nazca ridges are sequential chains of submarine mountains of volcanic origin located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, jointly extending over 2,900 km. The western end of the ridge intersects the East Pacific Rise within the Chilean territory of the Easter Islands, while its eastern end adjoins the western end of Nazca ridge. Currently, over 200 species of invertebrates and over 170 species of fish are known to inhabit the 22 explored seamounts of the ridges. Considering the overall number of seamounts in the region, the discovery of many more species can be expected. The area is a biodiversity hotspot with one of the highest levels of marine biological endemism (species found only in this location).
About Mission Blue
Mission Blue is an initiative of the Sylvia Earle Alliance to ignite public support for the protection of Hope Spots through the creation of a global network of marine protected areas to safeguard 20% of the ocean by 2020.
