Hope Spot - The Agulhas Front: a key feeding area for the endangered Amsterdam Albatross

About Hope Spot - The Agulhas Front: a key feeding area for the endangered Amsterdam Albatross
The Agulhas Front is a strong oceanic front that occurs from subsurface to intermediate depth beneath the upper 100 to 150 meters of the ocean. It originates below the southern tip of Africa and merges with the Southern Subtropical Front in the Indian Ocean sector of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC.) The Agulhas Front is a key feeding area for the critically endangered Amsterdam Albatross, which consists of only 100 mating pairs. The Front is also a key area for at least three other threatened albatross species breeding on the French southern territories. The Front has also been identified as key habitat for blue whales and tuna.
About Mission Blue
Mission Blue is an initiative of the Sylvia Earle Alliance to ignite public support for the protection of Hope Spots through the creation of a global network of marine protected areas to safeguard 20% of the ocean by 2020.
